I decided to draw a pun for my unit project! "What do baseball players and spiders have in common? ...they both catch flies." Heheheh. I was a lot more inspired this time around. I was originally planning on inking it once the sketch was done, but I think the old-fashioned, almost rustic vibe that the sketch gives off matches the time period that the uniform is from.
Here are two of my progress pictures from when I was pretty far along in the process but hadn't added many details yet in terms of the face, arm, glove, or shading in general. It was at this point I had decided not to give him a right arm, either. I thought the cut-off on both sides made it look better framed.
The one and only thumbnail sketch I composed for this piece. I only used one because, unlike most of my other works, I had a pretty good idea of what I was doing going in.
These last three images were used as my reference photos. The woman I used as a reference for good perspective on the upturned African American facial features. The baseball glove was used because I needed a closer look at one. The last one was referenced for the main pose and uniform.
