Translucence
This was the final sketch before transferring it to digital. The characters belong to me, the designs original, however they are inspired by the videogame "Undertale," along with my boyfriend and myself.
First lineart draft! Worth noting, this piece was my first time ever drawing on a tablet. I've only ever drawn digitally on Ibis Paint on my phone, so having not only a bigger screen but also PRESSURE SENSITIVITY have been major improvements. Its been difficult to get used to, as I've never used the program before, but I feel like it will benefit my art in the long-run.
This is the flat color, along with very minimal shading. This stage was mostly to get the colors right before creating the background and lighting. For my next project, I'm going to create the sketch, THEN the background before going in digitally, though. I'm very happy with my color pallet, but the process would have been much easier if I had a solid background and lighting plan first.
This shows the background progress, as well as general shading progress. Both still have a long way to go, though. I want the background to look smoother and less "sketchy," for lack of a better word. I'm also having some trouble with shading, I feel like my light source is somewhat inconsistent. I'm very proud of the waterfall progress, though. I forgot to take pictures, but let's just say it didn't look even remotely like water before.
As previously mentioned, this piece is inspired by the videogame "Undertale," by Toby Fox. The characters and their designs belong to my boyfriend and I, but they are inspired by The Falls, a location in Undertale. This is also the inspiration behind my color choices (this is a screenshot from the game).
This is what I used as a pose reference for my piece. It's fanart of two characters from a cartoon called "Adventure Time." I couldn't find the original artist, as the piece was on Pinterest, but I do not claim to own the characters OR the art.
The finished product! I decided at towards the end to make the piece lineless, I felt it contributed more to the cartoon style than my lines and made the whole thing appear smoother.
This is the initial traditional sketch of the piece. I always start traditionally, then take a picture and move to a digital medium. I spent much more time on this stage than I usually do because I wanted to make sure I got the anatomy, expressions, etc. exactly right. It was the main constructive criticism I received from my peers on my last piece.
The finished lineart :) Not much to say on
this, but I used the syrup pen on Procreate to
do it. The characters are Alina Starkov and
Nikolai Lantsov from Leigh Bardugo's "Shadow
and Bone" book trilogy. The designs are my
own, but the characters aren't.
What I have so far of the background. I'm
using this as an opportunity to practice
painting digitally, along with using color to
depict a certain feel. For example, I'm using
the snow along with the stone balcony
background to make the characters appear
more cold and desperate, as the scene
depicts.
The following three images are photos of my classmates, Star Wiesner, Ashton Reedy and River Cleveland, that I used as pose and clothing references. Unlike my last piece, I wanted to use REAL models instead of cartoon references to get the anatomy and clothing physics right.
The following two photos were my background references. I wanted to make sure I chose the right colors to match the emotions of the piece. I used the Nikko Rull brush to paint the background.
...And here it is, the final product! This was a very experimental piece, and I learned a lot. Playing with the colors and themes was really fun, by adding gray banisters, dark snow, excessive shadows, etc. I was able to create a very dark and desperate mood, which is what I was going for. As for my inquiry question, this piece is supposed to depict desperation in a relationship. I'm not going into the context of the scene because its irrelevant, but Nikolai (the figure on the right) is desperately trying to cling to whatever humanity he has left. Standing by is Alina, knowing there is absolutely nothing she can do. Coming off of my last piece, I wanted to strengthen my facial expressions and poses, spending more time than ever before studying before actually sketching. I feel as though I was able to depict the emotion much more accurately this time, and am proud of my progress.
Okay so I lied, THIS is the finished product. My AP class did a critique and I decided to go back and fix some problems areas. Overall, I'm a lot happier with it now.
Thumbnail sketches! Trying my hand at comic formatting :) This piece revolves around the passing of time, and I thought a comic would be the ideal way of conveying that.
I always sketch traditionally and then transfer it to a digital platform, I've tried sketching digitally and just can't for some reason so that's something to work on.
Lineart progress! I'll save the proper reflection for the end, but this piece in relation to my inquiry question is about the progression of a relationship through time. I'm hoping to capture the process of from curiosity, to fondness, to appreciation, to love.
I technically finished this project, but hated the result, so I won't be sharing any more
My art started feeling hollow, since recently I've been doing a lot of drawing in other people's styles for various projects. So for this, I decided to just doodle as messily as possible, not caring about the finished project. Not only did it feel freeing, but the finished product ended up LOOKING free, a bunch of happy shapes and colors :)
I love this so much, and it's rare that I say that about my own work these days. I didn't care if the final product looked good, and I think that's why I ended up liking it. I actually had fun creating, and didn't give myself a deadline. I feel like that's what art is all about, and I had forgotten that while creating for a while.
