Chill Pill

I decided to go with the storyboard option for my unit 3 project because I’ve always been drawn to cartoons (no pun intended). I saw this as my opportunity to share this love with the class, even learning a bit more myself. I’ve wanted to be a cartoonist since seventh grade, but since then it’s become more of a hobby than a career choice. This storyboard is called “Daily Occurrence” and is an exaggerated joke about how my sister makes me late for school every day. Something I wish I did differently was managed my time better and done more in class. I also wish I had organized my layers better and spent more time on the last two frames, they were really last-minute.

These are my thumbnail sketches in my sketchbook. I ended up making more than I needed, but that was a good thing because it helped me decide EXACTLY what I wanted the finished product to look like.

These pictures were two of my references images. I used a lot more, but they were all basic stock photos, so here are two examples. I used them to get the positioning of the characters right.

My current artist is Edd Gould. He passed away about nine years ago, but his work inspired me to start drawing cartoons in the first place when I was about twelve years old. He started his own animated show on YouTube called Eddsworld that was the primary inspiration for me to try to make cartoons of my own. Similarly to Hugh Harman, his overly exaggerated expressions/movements inspired this piece, along with his simple backgrounds.

I’m not sure if this counts, but my master artist is Hugh Harman, creator of Looney Toons. I love old-fashioned cartoons--the way they move, how casually they defy the laws of physics, how animated they are, it’s something I have a really deep appreciation for. He inspired this piece because, while it was realistic for the most part, I tried to add aspects of these exaggerated movements.
